What theyre saying about Will Muschamp after beating Auburn – 247Sports

Will Muschamp has widely been considered on the hot seat in his fifth year as South Carolina’s head coach. Saturday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina, appears to have cooled it off for a bit.

The Gamecocks (2-2) pulled off a 30-22 win over No. 15 Auburn, bringing the program — and, of course, Muschamp — a significant victory. South Carolina’s last win over the Tigers (2-2) took place Dec. 2, 1933.

Including Saturday’s game, the two teams have only played each other 13 times in a series that dates back to Nov. 27, 1930. Still, the Muschamp-led Gamecocks got a historic victory — and a much-needed one, considering how the 2020 season kicked off — in a game the team came back from down 16-7.

“Really proud of our football team,” Muschamp said in a postgame press conference with the media. “That was a helluva win, that was a helluva football game. Auburn has a good football team. Our guys fought their ass off. They kept hanging in there regardless of the circumstances and situation. We made the plays we had to make. Did not start off very well in the game, obviously. Field position in the first quarter killed us offensively. We had the 80 or 90 yard power play called back.

“… I’m really proud of our football team. They showed a lot of resolve and fight. The adversity early in the game, continued to fight. Auburn, as I knew that program would do, would battle back, and our guys answered. I’m really proud of our football team. It was a helluva win.”

Here is a sampling of how the media reacted to South Carolina’s win over Auburn, with an emphasis on what it means for the Gamecocks and Muschamp…
