Bruno Fernandes has revealed Paul Pogba promised him that the pair would have a good understanding playing together for Manchester United.
12 months ago, after months of transfer speculation, Fernandes sealed his dream move to Old Trafford and fans were instantly picturing his link up with Pogba.
Unfortunately, supporters were forced to wait to see the duo in action as Pogba was currently recovering from surgery on an ankle injury that had side lined him for the majority of the Premier League campaign.
Fernandes started his first game at United just two days after his arrival in England but had to wait until June to play in the league with Pogba due to the postponement of the season as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Portuguese revealed the pair regularly spoke during Pogba’s injury rehabilitation with the World Cup winner watching his new teammate closely during his time on the treatment table.
“The relationship I have with Paul is good,” he told NBC Sport. “He speaks Italian and I speak Italian, from the beginning I knew him from Italy and he knows me. It was easy to work with him.
“Straight away when I arrived, he was injured. I saw him recovering and training on the pitch away from us.
“He was calling me sometimes when I was training and he said: ‘I’m seeing the games, I’m seeing your movement, don’t worry. When I’m fit, I will show you that I can find you. I see you move, you move to the right and to the left, in behind. When I come back, I will show you how I can find you a lot.’
“It shows you the confidence he gives to you, like when he comes back, he’s trying to help you become better and you help him to become better.”
Fernandes also opened up on his conversations with United legend Cristiano Ronaldo who also left Sporting Lisbon for Old Trafford.
The midfielder added he probably would have joined United even without a glowing recommendation from his countryman.
He said: “Yeah I spoke with him because he knows the club better than me. He gave me some advice. It was important for me. I think I would have joined the club anyway but when you speak with Cristiano it’s always better.
“We just spoke about the club, how its so big and how it would be good for me. The opportunity I would have to join such a big club. To have a chance to fight for my trophies. This is the biggest advice he gave to me.
“He said: ‘Just go, enjoy it, you will love the fans, they will love you so just try to enjoy your game and the best of you will come’.”
