Bayern Munich put Liverpool on the back foot as they initiate talks for Dayot Upamecano, according to reports. They could even more for a second supposed target.
This comes from Sport 1 in Germany. They claim Bayern have opened talks with RB Leipzig over Dayot Upamecano.
The player has a £39m release clause and the Bavarians are happy to meet it. He’s a player they feel desperate for, in fact, as they’re down to two senior defenders.
Bayern could also enter the race for Mohamed Simakan, per that report. The 20-year-old defender is at RC Strasbourg, with both Leipzig and AC Milan interested.
What RTK has to say
Two senior centre-halves – can you imagine? Sounds like bliss. They should try operating with a defensive midfielder and a teenager who played non-league last season.

Although, they almost certainly tried that experiment under Pep Guardiola.
Passive aggression aside, it’s clear that Liverpool won’t be the only ones looking at highly-promising defensive targets in 2021.
The Reds have links to both players, of course. Telefoot’s Julien Maynard claims they’re watching Simaka, much like Bayern.
And there have been many links to Upamecano. The Daily Mail has one of the latest, saying the Reds are one of seven elite clubs looking at the player.
The latter isn’t exactly surprising. We think the Leipzig man is the best-value defender around, if that release clause figure is accurate. No one else can offer his experience, potential, and success.
But if Bayern are in talks with Leipzig, it suggests they’re looking to get that one done early. It makes sense to do that, in our opinion.
Get it done now above the release clause and you can beat everyone else to the signing. Otherwise, you’re forced to compete with half a dozen others come the summer.
Then all it takes is one ridiculous contract offer and you miss out. Negotiate with Leipzig and you might pay extra but at least you’ll get the player.
Bayern firing the starter’s pistol before everyone else is ready in the Upamecano race – and it will leave Liverpool too far behind.
