James, 20, was called up to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the November international break despite being banned for two of England’s three games.
However, with the England squad travelling to Belgium for Sunday’s Uefa Nations League clash before hosting Iceland three days later, James has returned to Chelsea given he cannot play any part in either game.
Travel has been complicated due to the coronavirus pandemic, though England’s game against Iceland next week will be played at Wembley after the UK Government granted a travel exemption to the visiting side.
Following the Ireland game, James said of his call-up: “It is obviously a very good confidence-booster.
“It shows that [Southgate] still wanted me here and still believes in me.
“Obviously I will take the red card from last time and I will learn from it and move on and hopefully it will have a positive impact in the long run.
“I’m obviously devastated that I can’t play in the next two games but it is a mistake I need to learn from and keep on progressing.”
