In approximately four months’ time, Gareth Southgate and his England team will be finishing their short preparations for this summer’s delayed Euro 2020.

With still plenty of football to be played before then, the question remains of who exactly will be selected for the 23-man squad, which will see Southgate presented with a plethora of exciting talent to choose from.

While the emergence of Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and James Maddison in the national setup will give him food for thought in midfield, the England boss is presented with another selection headache up top.

Two of those forwards – Marcus Rashford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin – face each other this weekend.

The pair will go toe-to-toe for the third time this season when Manchester United welcome Everton to Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

It comes just six weeks after United got the better of the Toffees in the Carabao Cup, with Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial grabbing the goals in their 2-0 victory at Goodison Park.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men also inflicted a third straight defeat on Everton back in November, beating them 3-1 in their first Premier League meeting of the campaign – and the Toffees will be hoping to come out on top against the Red Devils this time out with the help of their star striker.

Southgate was seen in the stands at Villa Park on Wednesday night to watch West Ham’s impressive win over Aston Villa and he could be at the Theatre of Dreams this weekend to watch Rashford and Calvert-Lewin vie for his attention.

The English duo have been in fine form this season and boast similar goalscoring records going into this weekend’s clash.

Calvert-Lewin has played a key role in helping Everton push for a top-four spot, with his early season goalscoring form setting him apart from other competition for this season’s Golden Boot.

However, the Toffees’ slight dip in form also saw the forward’s goal tally dry up after an electric start before he suffered a hamstring injury in January.

Now, after ending his goal drought against Leeds, Calvert-Lewin will be looking to add to his tally of 16 goals in all competitions in Manchester this weekend.

While Calvert-Lewin is enjoying one of his best seasons to date, Rashford is also impressing for the Red Devils.

The 23-year-old has managed just as many goals, albeit in 11 more games, which on paper doesn’t look as good as Calvert-Lewin’s 16 strikes in 23 games.

What should be noted is that Rashford is a much more versatile forward and is often deployed on the left wing for United and for England, given captain Harry Kane’s stranglehold of the centre forward’s position.

The United academy graduate also has seven assists to his name this season – Calvert-Lewin is yet to register one.

While it can be argued that Calvert-Lewin is fulfilling his duties as a goalscoring centre forward, the fact Rashford has goals and assists to his name will stand him in greater stead.

This season alone, Calvert-Lewin has a higher shot conversion rate than Rashford and has a higher xG per 90 minutes than the Reds forward.

Both have also stepped up their defensive efforts in the final third, with Calvert-Lewin recovering the ball 11 times this season while Rashford has been more aggressive with 19 ball recoveries.

It is something Carlo Ancelotti has picked up on in recent weeks and has praised his Toffees front man for the defensive effort.

‘I think in my opinion it was more important the work that he (Calvert-Lewin) did with Sigurdsson defensively,’ Ancelotti said.

‘We needed this kind of work from our strikers, Richarlison included, (Alex) Iwobi, and after that they scored two fantastic goals. I’m pleased for this, but more for the work that they did defensively.’

The fact that both men are no strangers to pressing from the front will be music to Southgate’s ears considering how the England manager likes his team to dominate the ball and recover possession as quickly as possible.

Southgate likes to deploy a system with wingers, in either a 4-3-3 or a 3-4-3, to give wide options either side of Kane up top alone.

This system doesn’t bode well for Calvert-Lewin’s chances of a starting spot this summer given only one place for a striker.

Meanwhile, Rashford can deployed on the left or right and contribute that way.

However, there’s still a long road to this summer’s tournament and months of football left to play. Should either man want to improve their chances of selection, Saturday will be the perfect time to start.
