Lionel Messi has two demands before joining Man City and more transfer rumours – Manchester Evening News

Lionel Messi would need both Pep Guardiola and Sergio Aguero to stay at Manchester City in order to sign for the club, according to reports.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner shocked the football world this past summer when he announced his intention to leave Barcelona and City were immediately made the favourites to be his next club.

After weeks of speculation, Messi announced that he would remain in Spain in order to avoid a legal dispute with Barcelona over a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave for free.

He has continued to be highly critical of those in charge at the Camp Nou, however, and, with his contract currently set to expire for good in 2021, he will be free to walk away from Barca for nothing in the summer.

City will no doubt be interested in signing Messi if he does decide to leave Catalonia and Chief Operating Officer Omar Berrada, confirmed to the MEN in October that they will be able to afford a move.

According to Argentine outlet El Chiringuito, via SportWitness, City ‘continue to be in the lead’ for Messi’s signature and they are the ‘best placed’ team to do sign him.

However, it’s reported, ‘two very important factors’ as to why that is the case is because his former manager Guardiola and close friend Aguero are both at the Blues.

The pair are also currently in the final year of their contracts and could potentially leave at the end of the season. It’s claimed that if Messi is to move to Manchester then he would need both of them to stay.

Meanwhile, City are reportedly considering a move for former midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The energetic and combative Brazilian was sold to Aston Villa in 2019 after work permit issues prevented him from ever appearing for City but Guardiola has remained complimentary of him.

According to EuroSport, City are continuing to monitor the centre-midfield position and have ‘eyes’ on bringing Luiz back to the Etihad.
