‘Very very positive, looks really good’: Jurgen Klopp reveals Alisson is making ‘big steps’ in his recovery from injury… but the Liverpool number one is set to miss Saturday’s Merseyside Derby with Everton as Adrian prepares for another Premier League start

  • Liverpool face Everton in the first Merseyside derby of the season on Saturday
  • Jurgen Klopp revealed Alisson Becker is making ‘big steps’ in his injury recovery
  • Yet the Brazilian is still set to miss the Everton clash and Adrian will deputise
  • The Spanish back-up conceded seven goals in his last match against Aston Villa

Jurgen Klopp has revealed goalkeeper Alisson Becker has made ‘big steps’ in his recovery from a shoulder injury ahead of Saturday’s Merseyside derby with Everton

The Brazilian shot stopper was ruled out for six weeks with the injury a fortnight ago, with back-up goalkeeper Adrian set to deputise for the Goodison Park clash this weekend.

Whilst revealing his team news ahead of the lunchtime derby, which will see Reds midfielder Naby Keita miss out through injury,  Klopp claimed Alisson has been making solid improvements during the international break.

Klopp told the media: ‘Very, very positive (news) with Ali. (It) looks really good. (He has) made big steps. I don’t have a timeframe but it looks really good.’

‘Naby will not be ready. Apart from that, they all came back healthy from the national team. Long-term, the likes of Ox (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain) are still out.’

Alisson’s most recent game for Liverpool was the 3-1 win over Arsenal at the end of September but was then ruled out for the following match – a trip to Aston Villa.

Adrian was placed between the sticks for the Reds who were thumped 7-2 by Dean Smith’s side in a shocking result, with the Spanish deputy responsible for several of the conceded goals.

Liverpool looked like they were prepared to bring in another goalkeeper before Friday’s transfer deadline and were liked with Jack Butland, but the Stoke City goalkeeper ended up joining Crystal Palace

If Alisson is out for the six week first forecasted at the beginning of his injury, then Adrian could be in goal for as many as Liverpool’s first three Champions League ties – which include tricky tips to Ajax and Atalanta.

The Spanish goalkeeper made a couple of clear errors when Klopp’s side exited the European competition last season at the last-16 stage to Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool take on Everton this weekend sitting three points behind their Merseyside rivals, who have begun their top-flight season with four wins out of four.

Carlo Ancelotti can move Everton six points clear of Liverpool if the Italian coach can stun the Premier League champions at Goodison Park and make a real statement about their intentions this season.

Liverpool will be boosted by the return of Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara, who both missed the Aston Villa thrashing due to testing positive for coronavirus.
