Hibernian and Dundee were drawn to meet again in the Scottish League Cup after Hibs beat the Dens Park side to seal top spot in their first-round group.

Stevie Mallan struck from long range for Hibs but Christie Elliott levelled following Paul McGowan’s clever pass.

Kevin Nisbet was credited with Hibs’ second but it appeared to be a Jordan McGhee own goal.

And substitutes Jamie Gullan and Melker Hallberg soon added their names to the scoresheet.

The sides will meet at Easter Road on the weekend of 28 and 29 November.

Jack Ross’ side, who made it four wins out of four in Group B, started strongly and Mallan received George Newell’s pass before unleashing a 30-yard strike that beat goalkeeper Jack Hamilton in a central location.

Nisbet laid off for Newell at the end of a swift sequence of passes and the eventual shot trickled along the ground before coming back off the right-hand post.

Hibs did not heed the warning after Danny Mullen threatened for the visitors and McGowan’s chipped ball eliminated the home defence for Elliott to force home the equaliser.

Jamie Murphy was the architect of Hibs’ second, his driving run taking out two defenders before his cross towards Nisbet was turned in by McGhee and Boyle then set up tap-ins for Gullan and Hallberg.

Hibernian head coach Jack Ross: “It’s a home draw for us. It’s a bit bizarre that you can draw the team you’ve just played against.

“The response from the players character-wise was excellent and also bravery because we had to commit numbers forward to score the goals we did and we did that really well in the closing 20 minutes of the game.”

Dundee manager James McPake: “It was a bit harsh, we did ever so well to get back in the game, but to lose three goals in six minutes is criminal.

“Loads of positives to take, we came up against a good Premiership side and held our own for large periods but we need to be better in our box in particular.”
