Gary Lineker has praised Jack Grealish after the Aston Villa captain’s response to a question about Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.
Grealish was asked about Mount’s role in the England setup after England’s 3-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland on Thursday.
Both players started the friendly match at Wembley, with Grealish grabbing an assist for Jadon Sancho’s goal in the first-half.
Gareth Southgate’s decision to start the pair came after the England boss hit out at his perceived reluctance to play Grealish instead of Mount.
In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, Grealish said the reaction towards Mount’s recent inclusion for England has been unfair and also labelled the regular comparisons that are made between the players as ‘annoying’.
“I love Mason,” he said. “It’s a bit annoying actually because he probably gets a bit of stick at times from it.
“I’ve always been close with Mason. I think he’s a terrific player, and I don’t think we’re even fighting for the same spot, to be honest.
“If anything, he’s underrated, deserves all the credit he gets, and people who know about football will understand just how good he is.”
Lineker applauded Grealish after a clip of his interview was shared on social media.
The former England striker turned presenter tweeted: “Well said Jack Grealish. 2 wonderfully talented and very different footballers. Plenty of room for both in the side.”
