Frank Lampards “surprise” WhatsApp message shows his role in Chelsea transfers – Mirror Online

Thiago Silva has made an instant impact in transforming Chelsea’s defence.

The west London club swooped to bring in the experienced Brazilian on a free transfer when he departed Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.

Silva has helped shore up Frank Lampard’s defence and turn them into a side being tipped as title contenders by many.
And Silva has now revealed how Lampard was able to tempt him to Stamford Bridge – via a WhatsApp message that caught him by surprise.

Silva told UOL Esporte : “When I was about to sign with Chelsea, when I said ok, he sent me a message with a photo of us shaking hands as captains at the Maracana, in the friendly between Brazil and England.

“It was a big surprise for me, because I didn’t remember that game.

“I certainly didn’t hesitate to be coached by him. I’m happy that he enjoyed my work so much, I hope to do it in the best possible way to help Chelsea.

“It is a source of pride to be coached by a player I played against and was one of the greatest midfielders in the world.

“For me, it is very joyful to share dressing rooms, exchange ideas, and look to help in every way.”

Lampard recently discussed the move to land Silva and explained how he was excited when he became available.

He downplayed his own role as he outlined the process but Silva’s comments show he clearly plays an active role in the recruitment process.

“When Thiago became available, it was something that really excited me,” Lampard said.

“And it was something that the club moved very swiftly on. It felt good work at the time.

“And now Thiago is showing it with his performances on the pitch.

“When I talk about the owner of the club, I also talk about Marina and I talk about Petr Cech in terms of the support I’ve had.

“We’ve had a good run up at this. People think that we made a lot of business in five minutes.

“In the first year of my career as a manager here we couldn’t bring players in.

“So we had a long term view of looking at last year, where we felt we could strengthen and it was very joined up.

“I certainly had an input I was very happy with, in terms of the type of players that we brought into the squad.

“We worked and I think a lot of people should take credit in terms of what we brought in.

“Now we’ve seen some great signs recently where players are starting to bed in and be fit.”
