Edinson Cavani becomes fifth highest Conmebol qualifying scorer ever – United In Focus

Edinson Cavani scored for Uruguay at the weekend as his country beat Colombia 3-0.

It was encouraging to see especially after he had netted days earlier for Manchester United for the first time in a 3-1 win over Everton.

The goal was Cavani’s 51st international goal, and it also saw him join a prestigious list in South American football.

The strike was Cavani’s 17th in Conmebol World Cup qualifiers, Ovacion reported.

Considering the qualifiers are held every four years, this is a good tally, and shows how consistent he has been over his career.

Cavani’s goal moved him into the list of the top five of all time in Conmebol qualifying scorers.

His 17th saw him tie level with former Chile forward Ivan Zamorano.

Cavani is just one shy of Marcelo Salas, with Hernan Crespo, Lionel Messi, and international teammate Luis Suarez in front of him.

Time to rise up the list

Cavani has a chance to rise up the list this week when Uruguay take on Brazil.

Only three games have been played by Uruguay so far and as such, there is a long way to go in the lead up to 2022.

United have signed a prolific striker who still has plenty more to offer at the top level.

Having the chance to compete at the World Cup one more time will drive Cavani on, and in the mean time, United can reap the benefits.

There is a good chance Cavani will get the nod to start for United in the first game back after the international break, and that is well worth looking forward to.
