Chelsea FC 3-3 Southampton LIVE! Premier League match result, latest news and reaction from Lampard – Evening Standard

Chelsea vs Southampton LIVE!

Chelsea were back in Premier League action following the international break today, but were held to a thrilling 3-3 draw by Southampton today.

Frank Lampard‘s Blues opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge through a fine individual effort for Timo Werner. Werner doubled his tally just before the half-hour, again stealing a march on the hapless Jan Bednarek.

But Chelsea were forced out of cruise control just before the break, with Danny Ings rounding Kepa and slotting home to halve the deficit heading into the interval.

Che Adams then levelled things up 12 minutes after the restart, but Kai Havertz put Chelsea 3-2 in front soon after – but the Saints were level at 3-3 in injury time to deny Lampard a win.

Live Updates

Frank Lampard has been talking to the BBC about Timo Werner’s display…

“They are great goals. The second in terms of the team was class but it is a lot to do by Timo. Those moments will come from him and other players. But we need to be more solid and making individual mistakes gives other teams chances.”

And here is Jannik Vestergaard, whose late goal earned a point for the visitors…

“I was confident we’d get another chance on the second-half performance. I was happy to get the chance and guide the ball in. On the second half performance, it was deserved.

“Theo did brilliantly – he went the full 90 minutes. We require a lot from our wingers – he did well offensively and defensively.”

Timo Werner has been giving his reaction to that. Rather mixed feelings, it seems…

“The first half we played very well. When you get a goal two or three minutes before half-time it is not easy. You have to think with a clear head. Southampton make a lot of pressure on us and pressed us high. We gave them too much in terms of opportunities. We have to win the game.

“I am happy about the goals but I want to win the game. 50% I am happy, 50% not.

“I don’t know if we have a problem but the last three games we concede six goals and it is not where we want to be, to compete for titles. In Germany we always say defence wins titles. If we concede so many it is hard to win games and win titles.”

FULL-TIME | Chelsea 3-3 Southampton |

GOAL! | Chelsea 3-3 Southampton | Jannik Vestergaard 90+2

They’ve nicked a point! Walcott drills across goal and the big man bundles in.

90+1 mins: There’ll be four added minutes…

90 mins: Tammy Abraham is on for Timo Werner – who looks knackered – for the final few minutes.

86 mins: Another Blues change as Frank Lampard tries to see this out – Reece James is on for Christian Pulisic.

81 mins: Close!

Great work from Theo Walcott down the right and he cuts back for Danny Ings but his low strike is kept out by Kepa.

77 mins: That would’ve sealed it! Ben Chilwell’s corner is met by Kai Havertz, who has a free header but can’t direct it under the bar.

72 mins: Hakim Ziyech is on for his Chelsea debut and it’s Mason Mount who makes way.

70 mins: Neither manager has turned to his substitutes bench yet but it won’t be long you sense.

GOAL! | Chelsea 3-2 Southampton | Kai Havertz 59′

Brilliant response! Werner breaks in down the right and unselfishly squares for Kai Havertz to stroke home his first Premier League goal.

GOAL! | Chelsea 2-2 Southampton | Che Adams 57′

What on earth has happened here?!

Kurt Zouma plays a poor backless to Kepa, who realises at the last second that he can’t pick it up and Adams nips in to score. Why has he not just cleared that out?!

54 mins: Close!

Danny Ings has a go from the edge of the box and it’s only just wide. Not sure Kepa would’ve got there.

52 mins: Southampton have a bit of a spring in their step after getting that goal right on the stroke of half-time. They look much better organised.

We are back underway…

HALF-TIME | Chelsea 2-1 Southampton |

GOAL! | Chelsea 2-1 Southampton | Danny Ings 43′

One chance, one goal.

Out of nothing, Southampton are back in it as Ings is slotted in and coolly rounds Kepa to score.

38 mins: Southampton have barely been out of their half since that second goal – it’s all Chelsea.

Bednarek cannot get near Werner when he makes those runs off the shoulder.
