Burnley vs Man City LIVE highlights and reaction as Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling give Blues three points – Manchester Evening News

Manchester City restored their three point advantage at the top of the Premier League table tonight and still have a game in hand after Manchester United’s big win last night.

United beat Southampton 9-0 to boost their goal difference and move level on points with City at the top – but City’s goal difference remains superior, and they have two games in hand over their rivals.

Pep Guardiola will have been wary of a Burnley side who won at Anfield recently, and have historically made life difficult for City at Turf Moor. The City boss played Aymeric Laporte, John Stones and Ruben Dias together for the first time, with Gabriel Jesus also starting.

Jesus opened the scoring within three minutes, before Raheem Sterling converted before the break to secure a comfortable win. City extended their winning run to thirteen ahead of a difficult set of fixtures which takes them to Liverpool on Saturday, before an FA Cup tie at Swansea, a home fixture with Tottenham, and away trip to Arsenal.

Sterling looks ahead to Liverpool

More from Sterling to BT Sport, as he looked ahead to the weekend’s trip to Liverpool.

He said:

“Just togetherness, we’ve seen how difficult the season has been, it’s about grinding results out, week by week, focussing on the next game. That’s what we’ve been doing in the last couple of weeks, grinding out results.

“The more you win, the better you feel, we’ve done a professional result today. Going into that one [at Liverpool] it’s the same as today, we try to keep our focus and go for the win.”

Sterling’s verdict after Burnley win

Raheem Sterling tells BT Sport how the first goal was important today:

It’s good to get another win and keep a clean sheet. we’ve been on a good run of games and we need to continue it.

In any game it’s always good to get the first goal as quick as possible, then you can work your way into the game from there. That’s what we did today.

We know exactly what they’ll bring to the game, physical, second balls, balls into our box I thought the boys at the back dealt with them really well and it was great to keep a clean sheet as well.

City stepping up

City have stepped up a gear this half, seeking to put the game to bed and turn their thoughts to Sunday’s big trip to Anfield.

The decision against Mahrez, when he seemed to have scored from Gabriel Jesus’ cross, was fractional, but there are more goals in this.

Ederson proving his importance

Burnley pressed City so well then that Dias was forced to play a ball back to Ederson on his goalline.

It was awkward, yet in one swing of his boot the goalkeeper played an accurate pass 30 yards along the floor to Bernardo, taking out four Burnley players and prompting a City attack.

That is why he is so crucial to Guardiola’s team.
