Millwall booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round with a hard-fought win at National League side Boreham Wood.
The Championship visitors dominated the first half, Kenneth Zohore sweeping home the opener from 12 yards after Scott Malone’s run and pass.
The Wood, ranked 66 places below their opponents, should have levelled when Matt Rhead skied over from 12 yards.
But Millwall – who made eight changes – deservedly scored another through Shaun Hutchinson’s header from a corner.
Victory for Gary Rowett’s Lions was only their second in 14 matches and sees them past the third round of the competition for a club record fifth successive season.
They could have been out of sight by half-time, on-loan Tottenham midfielder Troy Parrott twice shooting just wide, with Tyler Burey and Ryan Leonard forcing fine saves from home keeper Nathan Ashmore.
Striker Zohore, on loan from West Brom, eventually made their pressure count with a calm finish after great work from Malone and Parrott down the left.
To their credit Luke Garrard’s in-form underdogs – in the FA Cup third round for the first time ever – started the second half brightly and Millwall centre-back Jake Cooper was perhaps fortunate not to be given a second yellow card for a block on Junior Morias which thwarted a potential counter attack.
Former Lincoln and Mansfield striker Rhead had the Wood’s only clear-cut opportunity but he leant back as he struck Morias’ cutback well over.
Defender Hutchinson leapt above his marker to power home Millwall’s second and they could have won by a wider margin had star man Malone managed to find the net with two well-struck efforts late on.
Boreham Wood boss Luke Garrard told BBC Three Counties Radio:
“I think that they deserved it – they were very productive – I think they could have scored three or four before half-time.
“They moved the ball superbly. Yes they made eight changes but those players would walk into any team in the National League.
“We didn’t play to our maximum, which we all know we had to do to get through the tie.”
Millwall manager Gary Rowett:
“I think it was a professional job in the end, it was a difficult game with our current form and perhaps not being as confident as we would like to be.
“It’s always a difficult place to come, a non-league ground – it’s a brilliant setup, you can see the organisation.
“You’ve got to match the mentality, and hope that your quality shines through. That’s how the game panned out.
“Once the first goal went in, it was an excellent goal, we settled down. But when it remains at one-nil, it still gives them an opportunity.”
