A draw in the Merseyside derby means Aston Villa are no longer able to go top of the Premier League by beating Leicester City on Sunday.
Villa were three points behind table-topping Everton with a superior goal difference before Saturday’s fixtures having won all three of their opening top-flight matches.
The memorable 7-2 mauling of Liverpool before the international break came after wins against Fulham and Sheffield United.
Those results mean Villa are keeping pace with the league leaders inside the opening month of the season and they would have been in with a shout of taking top spot had Liverpool beaten Everton on Saturday. Although a win for the Reds would have put Jurgen Klopp’s side three points ahead of Villa, their goal difference is vastly inferior.
Instead the rivals drew 2-2 in an action-packed encounter at Goodison Park with Everton twice coming from behind before Liverpool saw a stoppage-time winner chalked out by the video assistant referee.
The result means Villa are unable to claim top spot with a win away at fifth-placed Leicester tomorrow but fans all made the same point on social media.
@Dalyvilla: Two possible title challengers taking points of each other is good for us long run.
@Terrytini99: In the long run two of our rivals for the title drawing is no bad thing.
@GHVilla: We can [go top] next Friday night though by beating Leeds.
@Wesleyboyle51: Superb! Paved the way for #avfc to win the league now. An Everton win would have been nice though. Think we are in the driving seat for the title now.
@Kristiantwarbu1: Top of the league here we come #avfc.
@Awab_nawari: Draw was the best result for us. The title charge is on lads.
@TheVillaVision: Decent result for Villa that. two of our title rivals dropping points.
@DavidBraley90: Advantage @AVFCOfficial in the title race!
