Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish is ‘somebody for the future’ at Arsenal, according to former Gunners midfielder Gilberto Silva.
He received his third England call-up this week and will make his first competitive start for the Three Lions against Belgium in the Nations League on Sunday night.
A host of clubs including Manchester United and Manchester City have been linked with Grealish in recent transfer windows, but the playmaker committed his future to his boyhood club by signing a new five-year contract in September.
That came after Villa placed a hefty price tag – thought to be around £80million – on Grealish to deter suitors over the summer.
But former Brazil midfielder Gilberto thinks Grealish could be the ‘beautiful’ player that Arsenal need under Mikel Arteta.
“Grealish, amazing. It seems like he could be a player that Arsenal missed,” he told the Invisible Wall podcast.
“With his ability, he was one of the guys in the middle who can play beautiful football. He controls the ball, assists and can score goals.
“He is slightly different from Dennis Bergkamp, but he could be somebody for the future at Arsenal.”
But Villa fans on social media have hit back at the comments, arguing that a move to The Emirates is unlikely. Here is a flavour of the reaction:
@DaveWhittall: Anybody ever wonder if he might “do a Gerrard” and stay loyal to HIS club for the rest of his career?
@SWillans1980: Arsenal can’t even afford to keep their mascot, they most definitely can’t afford Jack Grealish.
@AVFCsgt777: If Jack EVER decides to move, the only move he should consider is to European giants the likes of Barca, Madrid, Juve or Bayern.
@Holtenderbenny: He wouldn’t have gone to Arsenal anyway.
@IanJamsie: There is more chance of us buying Villa fan Mason Greenwood, than either of you (Arsenal or Manchester United) getting Jack.
@MrAndyrewT: Neither club can afford him.
