Ally McCoist and Chris Sutton clash over Celtic reserves as Rangers hero blasts Hoops legend – Daily Record

Chris Sutton and Ally McCoist clashed after a claim from the Celtic legend that the Hoops would be playing a reserve side on Saturday because of the Covid crisis hitting the club.

It’s been one of the biggest talking points in the build-up to the game between Celtic and Rangers with three players out of the game, and Odsonne Edouard only returning to Scotland on Friday after isolating in France.

The striker tested positive and could miss the game, while Nir Bitton, Hatem Elhamed and Ryan Christie are definitely out.

And Sutton insisted all the pressure is on Rangers because of the depleted Celtic squad but McCoist was having none of it as they went head-to-head on BT Sport.

The pair were refereed by Darrell Currie on the Scottish Football Extra show and McCoist had his head in his hands in disbelief as Sutton gave his view.

Sutton said: “In terms of the selection opportunities for Steven Gerrard, he has essentially a full squad to pick from.

“Celtic are heavily, heavily depleted. Rangers have started the season well and the feeling is they’ve been playing some really good stuff and in a good rhythm and people have looked at Celtic and and it’s been a little bit stodgy, a little bit bitty and haven’t got going.

“But having said all that, eventually they will get kickstarted and there’s no better game to get kickstarted in than against their biggest rivals.

“They’d stand a far greater chance, this is essentially Celtic reserves and in many respects it piles more pressure on Rangers going into this fixtures because there’s this feeling, but we’ve seen this feeling before across the city.

“After Rangers defeated Celtic last time out and all the celebrations and ‘we’re going to win 55’ and ‘it’s coming’. We saw what happened. They haven’t got the stomach, or they’ve shown in the past couple of seasons they haven’t got the stomach. They bottle it down the straight and who knows, they may bottle it again at the weekend.”

McCoist responded: “Even by his own standards, that’s some amount of drivel. Really.

“Don’t give me your nonsense about Celtic reserves and trying to put pressure on Rangers. We’ve seen it before. I invented it back in the 70s.”

Sutton: “Come on, Celtic are depleted. Why can’t we just say it is? He’s worried isn’t he. When you see a Rangers legend worried like he is, because he knows it’s true. If Rangers don’t get over the line in this one, the big questions come out.”

McCoist: “That’s very true, but that there is not my worried face. This is not my worried face. I’m very much looking forward to the game, but I’m not buying you trying to release any pressure at all from Celtic by saying it’s a reserve team.

“When you can pick a midfield of Brown, McGregor, Ntcham. They will be just as strong.”

Sutton: “Christie’s always in there.”

McCoist: “He’s got a good squad to pick from, Lenny. Edouard is another one, in fact Celtic might even be stronger because Griffiths is back now and he’s scored a very important goal. They might even be stronger.”

Sutton: “How can you say they are going to be stronger with a straight face?”

McCoist: “With Griffiths back in the squad they’re a better side. He’s proven by coming back and scoring so he’s back to fitness.”

Sutton: “As you well know, one swallow doesn’t make a summer.”

McCoist: “Chris is talking about players being out but arguably the key player from the two teams, Aribo is the one who will be missing. He’s an excellent player and he’s been missed by Rangers. We talked about Celtic missing one or two players, Rangers are missing a key player in Aribo, he won’t play. For that reason I would start Arfield.”
