A deal done in a matter of hours: How Southampton ended up signing Takumi Minamino – The Athletic

Southampton started the January transfer window looking for a full-back and ended it signing Liverpool playmaker Takumi Minamino on loan.

Even going into deadline day, the hope was that there would be an addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s defensive ranks. But it became clear by the afternoon that this wasn’t going to be possible.

Up until Monday evening, the notion of taking Minamino on loan hadn’t even been considered. This was an opportunistic deal that arose after Southampton enquired a different Liverpool player.

Neco Williams, the 19-year-old right-back, was the man in whom Southampton initially expressed an interest. But it was just too late in the day for that deal to materialise. Liverpool, understandably given their own defensive issues this season, didn’t want to leave themselves shorter at the back.

It was only after this that the prospect of Minamino going to St Mary’s for the rest of the season was discussed.
